You can work while collecting Social Security retirement benefits. Before full retirement age, earnings above the applicable limit can cause benefits to be withheld. The first useful step is to identify the type of income, the calendar year and the month you reach full retirement age. A pension deposit and a paycheck should not automatically go into the same earnings-test total.
Which limit applies?
SSA's 2026 guidance lists two annual thresholds. For someone below full retirement age throughout 2026, it withholds 1 dollar for each 2 dollars of earnings above 24,480 dollars. In the year full retirement age is reached, it withholds 1 dollar for each 3 dollars above 65,160 dollars, counting earnings only before the full-retirement-age month. From that month onward, the earnings test no longer reduces benefits.
These are 2026 figures, not a permanent allowance or a promise about another year. Follow the current SSA link for the year being planned. SSA has a special monthly rule that may help in the first year of retirement; do not simply divide the annual allowance by 12 and assume that is your result.
Which income belongs in the review?
SSA counts wages and net self-employment earnings, including certain employment-related payments. Pensions, annuities, interest and investment income are excluded from this particular test. That does not settle tax treatment, Medicare premiums or a different program's income rules. Work outside the United States can involve another test.
| Record to identify privately | Question to resolve |
|---|---|
| Expected wages and self-employment | Which earnings count, and when were they earned? |
| Final pay, leave or bonus | Does SSA need an explanation of this payment? |
| Full retirement age month | Which annual rule applies before this month? |
| Midyear work stoppage | Could the special monthly rule apply? |
| Pension or other income | Is this outside this test but relevant to another calculation? |
Withholding is not the same as a tax
SSA recalculates benefits at full retirement age to account for months affected by excess-earnings withholding. Do not describe that as an immediate cash refund or promise when an individual will recover a particular amount. Plan near-term cash flow using the actual SSA notice and payment schedule, and report changed earnings through SSA's current instructions.
Federal retirees should also distinguish this test from the FERS annuity supplement review. They are separate benefits with separate administration; a result for one is not an award determination for the other.
Your next step
Use SSA's linked earnings-test guidance with your own estimates and confirm questions about unusual payments directly with SSA. The claiming-age comparison helps organize the larger decision. Keep pay statements and identifying records private; this page does not calculate your entitlement or replace a tax professional's advice.
