FERS annuity supplement and earnings checklist

The FERS annuity supplement is a separate question from your basic FERS pension and from claiming Social Security. Before building it into an income plan, ask whether your retirement category qualifies, when any supplement would begin or end, and how earnings could affect it. Retirement before age 62 does not by itself answer those questions.

Confirm the benefit before estimating an amount

OPM's retirement guidance describes the supplement for qualifying FERS retirement situations and an earnings test. Use the category that your agency or OPM actually confirms. Keep disability, deferred, postponed, early and special-category retirement questions distinct rather than applying a coworker's result to a different situation.

Write the basic annuity, any supplement and any Social Security benefit on separate lines. Label each amount as an estimate or an official determination. A general pension-formula illustration does not establish supplement eligibility or calculate a Social Security benefit.

Identify the reporting year

OPM's supplement-survey guidance describes reporting post-retirement earned income, including wages and net self-employment earnings. It distinguishes these from items such as TSP disbursements. Its example explains that the earnings-test reduction affects the supplement rather than the basic annuity.

The page checked for this draft still refers to 2025 earnings and a 2025 exempt amount. A heading saying "this year" is not enough to turn an older figure into a current limit. Check the actual earnings year and the current instructions attached to your OPM request before using a dollar threshold or deciding whether a response is required.

Question Who should resolve it
Does my retirement category qualify for a supplement? Your agency benefits office or OPM.
Which months and earnings year are under review? The office responsible for your survey or benefit determination.
How are wages earned before retirement treated? OPM, using the actual timing and current instructions.
How should a particular self-employment item be reported? OPM and, where needed, your tax professional.
What changes if I return to federal employment? The hiring agency and OPM, considering the appointment.
Where is the official response due, and when? The verified instructions for your own notice.

Keep two different decisions separate

For example, someone may be considering part-time work and also wondering when to claim Social Security. First obtain the supplement rules that apply to the work and reporting year. Then examine the separate Social Security question. Do not treat a supplement estimate as a recommendation to stop working, claim benefits or buy an insurance product.

Keep tax returns, claim numbers and earnings statements in the official process you have verified. For surrounding context, read the federal benefits conversation worksheet and FERS survivor-benefit guide.
