Financial breathing room when a serious diagnosis comes

Critical illness insurance pays you a lump sum if you are diagnosed with a condition the policy covers. Common examples are heart attack, stroke and cancer; the exact list depends on the policy.

How the money can help

The benefit is paid to you, not to a hospital, so you decide how to use it: deductibles, travel for treatment, household bills or time away from work to recover and be with family.

How it fits with health insurance

Critical illness coverage adds to your health insurance; it does not replace it. Health insurance pays providers for care, while this pays you cash when a covered diagnosis happens.

What to compare

Check which conditions are covered, how much of the benefit each one pays, any waiting period after you enroll, and whether a second diagnosis can be paid.

Limited-benefit supplemental insurance, not major medical insurance or a Medicare supplement.
