Keep your paycheck coming when you can't work

Short-term disability insurance pays a weekly or monthly benefit when a covered illness or injury keeps you off the job. It helps keep the bills paid while you focus on getting better, after your paid leave runs out.

How a claim works

Benefits start after a waiting period, often called the elimination period, and continue for up to the policy's benefit period while you remain unable to work. The benefit is usually a set amount or a share of your income.

What to compare

Look at the waiting period, how long benefits last, how the policy defines disability, whether pregnancy and pre-existing conditions are covered, and when coverage starts after you enroll.

For federal employees

Private short-term disability plans are available to federal employees and can be paid by payroll allotment if you choose. They are separate from any federal program, and many people use one to protect their income after their sick leave is used.
