A multi-year guaranteed annuity, commonly shortened to MYGA, combines a rate guarantee with other contract terms. The rate period, surrender-charge period and renewal decision window should be recorded separately even when their dates happen to align.
New York's insurance regulator describes multi-year guarantees and market value adjustments. Its state-specific discussion supplies useful concepts, not a promise that every MYGA renews in the same way.
Put each date on its own line
| Date or term | Record to locate | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Issue and effective date | Issued contract | When does the applicable period begin? |
| Initial rate guarantee | Contract schedule | What exactly is guaranteed, and for how long? |
| Surrender schedule | Charge table | When do charges end or change? |
| Renewal notice | Insurer communication | When will the next terms be known? |
| Election window | Applicable notice and provision | What instruction must arrive by which deadline? |
| Default treatment | Renewal provision | What happens if no instruction is received? |
A guaranteed initial rate is not automatically the renewal rate. Ask which minimum applies, whether a new guarantee or surrender period can begin and whether an MVA applies to a withdrawal. Do not substitute an old public rate sheet for the issued contract.
Prepare for renewal before the notice arrives
Keep a reminder based on the actual contract date and identify who receives insurer notices. If the owner has moved, verify the insurer's accepted address through its secure process. A missed notice should be raised promptly; this worksheet does not establish an extension.
When comparing available choices, ask for the result of keeping the contract, withdrawing an amount or making an eligible exchange. Keep contract charges, tax treatment and any new restrictions separate. A tax-deferred transfer does not make the new contract costless.
Review the actual choice
Request written confirmation of any separately authorized election and the resulting rate period, charges and liquidity terms. Reconcile those terms with the next statement.
A renewal comparison should identify the date of every quoted term and any conditions for honoring it. This guide provides no current rate, best-rate ranking or recommendation to replace an existing contract.
