Fixed, indexed and variable annuity review

Annuities can use similar names while exposing the owner to different risks. Compare the actual contract category before comparing a headline rate or illustration. A fixed indexed annuity and a registered index-linked annuity, often called a RILA, are distinct products.

Investor.gov distinguishes fixed, fixed indexed, registered index-linked and variable annuities. That educational comparison does not establish that an agency offers every category or holds the securities registrations needed for a particular transaction.

Identify the contract before comparing it

Category Feature to verify Question to ask
Fixed Guaranteed and renewal interest terms Which rate applies for which period?
Fixed indexed Contractual index-crediting formula Which limits determine credited interest?
Registered index-linked Index exposure and loss provisions What losses and interim adjustments are possible?
Variable Selected subaccounts and expenses How can investment performance affect value?
Optional rider Separate benefit and cost What conditions must be met?
Issuer Legal insurance company Who owes the contractual benefits?

An index reference does not mean the owner directly holds the index's stocks. Nor does a limitation on index-related losses eliminate surrender charges, fees, insurer risk or every other way that available cash could decline. Ask for the complete contract, disclosure and any required prospectus.

Compare one objective at a time

Suppose the goal is future income with access to emergency cash. Separate accumulation, available surrender value and the conditions for income. Ask what happens if money is needed before an index term ends or before the surrender schedule expires.

Use the same assumed purchase amount, dates and withdrawal pattern when requesting comparisons. Label guaranteed values and hypothetical outcomes. A favorable illustration under one set of assumptions is not a forecast or proof that one contract is best.

Verify authority and the decision record

Ask which professional and firm are responsible for any recommendation and which credentials apply to the actual product. Verify them through the appropriate regulator. Do not infer securities authority from an insurance license or an educational article.

Retain unresolved questions about loss exposure, costs, liquidity and guarantees. This worksheet supports an informed contract discussion; it does not choose an investment, recommend an allocation or authorize a purchase.
