Index annuity crediting terms worksheet

An index annuity's credited interest can differ substantially from the change in the index named in its brochure. The contract defines the measurement period and the formula. Start by identifying that formula rather than comparing a participation rate in isolation.

Investor.gov explains that index-crediting arrangements can combine participation rates, caps and spreads. Its examples illustrate mechanisms; they are not a return forecast for a particular contract.

Trace the complete calculation

Component Record to identify Question to resolve
Index Exact index and version Are dividends included or excluded?
Measurement Start, end and observation rules How is the change measured?
Participation Applicable percentage Which result is multiplied?
Cap Applicable limit At what stage is it applied?
Spread or margin Applicable deduction How does it interact with other features?
Crediting date Contract provision What happens if money leaves before the term ends?

Also identify which terms the insurer may change at renewal and which minimums or other limits constrain that change. An illustration using today's terms does not establish that those terms continue indefinitely.

Ask for a traceable example

Use a clearly labeled hypothetical index path and ask the insurer to show the steps under the exact contract formula. Keep a second example for a flat or declining path. Do not calculate a projected return from one attractive participation figure.

If the index uses a volatility-control or other specialized design, ask for its rules and actual history versus back-tested results. A back-test is not a history of what contract owners earned. This worksheet does not create or validate a performance forecast.

Separate crediting from available cash

A floor on index-linked interest does not establish that surrender value can never decline. Review fees, withdrawals, surrender charges, MVA provisions and insurer obligations separately. A RILA's loss provisions also differ from those of a fixed indexed annuity.

Retain the contract version, term dates and written example. Revisit the record when renewal terms change. A comparison should show the full formula and limitations, not a list of favorable percentages.
