Help with Medicare costs can come through different programs. Medicare Savings Programs and Part D Extra Help are related, but they do not cover exactly the same costs or use a single universal application decision. Identify the expense you need help with and the agency responsible before comparing an online income table with your own situation.
What do Medicare Savings Programs help with?
States administer Medicare Savings Programs. Depending on the program and eligibility, assistance can cover premiums and sometimes deductibles, coinsurance or copayments. Medicare identifies several programs, including QMB, SLMB, QI and QDWI, with different conditions.
Federal tables are a starting point, not a complete state determination. States may use different counting rules or more generous limits. Medicare encourages people to apply even when they are unsure they qualify. Do not rule yourself out using a screenshot from another year or another state.
What is Part D Extra Help?
Extra Help assists qualifying people with Medicare prescription drug costs. Some people qualify automatically through other benefits, while others apply. The Medicare page directs applicants to Social Security and explains how information can also be sent to a state to start a Medicare Savings Program application. Extra Help is not available in the U.S. territories through the same program; local assistance arrangements differ.
| Question | Keep the programs separate |
|---|---|
| Expense | Is the concern a Part B premium, medical cost sharing or drug cost? |
| Responsible agency | Does the question belong with the state, SSA or the drug plan? |
| Current status | Is there an application, an approval notice or an unresolved request? |
| Evidence | What does the responsible agency actually require? |
| Timing | Are renewal, reporting or effective-date instructions outstanding? |
Use this worksheet to route a question, not to calculate eligibility. Keep agency notices and the date of any explanation. An estimate from a comparison page should not replace an approval or renewal notice.

SHIP counselors provide free Medicare counseling and can help with applications. If you already receive assistance but a bill looks wrong, show the responsible provider or plan the appropriate program information through its secure channel and ask for a review. Different programs have different billing protections and covered expenses.
Use the Part D worksheet for a separate drug-coverage review. The coverage-notice guide can help organize a disputed decision.
Your next step is to contact your state program, SSA or SHIP. Keep income, resources, Medicare numbers and medical information private; this website does not collect them to determine eligibility. No benefit or approval is promised.
