Annuity surrender and liquidity review

Access to money depends on more than whether a contract permits a withdrawal. The amount requested, charges, adjustments and effect on benefits may all change the result. Begin with a current insurer calculation for the specific amount and date.

A contractual free-withdrawal allowance is different from an exemption from income tax or an additional federal tax. The word "free" needs an identified meaning.

Reconcile the requested transaction

Step Figure or provision to request Question to settle
Starting value Current contract statement Which value and date are used?
Gross request Proposed withdrawal amount Is it a partial withdrawal or full surrender?
Contract allowance Exact free-withdrawal provision What amount qualifies, and when?
Charges and adjustments Itemized insurer calculation Are surrender charges, MVA or other deductions applied?
Benefit effect Rider and guarantee illustration Could future income or death benefits change?
Net amount and tax Net payment and reporting information What remains for professional tax review?

Do not assume a universal annual withdrawal percentage. Ask whether the allowance is based on premium, value, interest, contract year or another measure. Also ask whether unused allowance carries forward; that feature is not automatic.

Test an emergency scenario

Suppose an owner needs more cash than the stated allowance. Request separate calculations for the allowance alone and the larger amount. Ask how each affects remaining values and any income rider. An excess withdrawal can have consequences beyond a one-time fee.

Check whether a waiver or special provision exists, what evidence it requires and whether it applies to the actual contract. Do not treat a health or confinement waiver as approved before the insurer makes its determination.

Keep liquidity and tax decisions connected

Ask a qualified tax professional about the actual account and distribution. An IRA annuity, a nonqualified annuity and an inherited contract can require different treatment.

Retain the dated insurer illustration and any separately authorized transaction confirmation. A quotation is not an instruction, and a projected net amount is not a completed payment. Review the resulting statement before relying on the remaining balance.
