A divorce-related TSP issue needs its own document trail. Track the account and TSP record-keeper decision separately from an OPM pension order, a life-insurance designation or a change to a will. One document's existence does not establish that every affected program has processed it.
Identify the benefit and the document
The TSP court-order regulations require an order to identify the TSP and satisfy program-specific conditions. If civilian and uniformed-services accounts exist, the account involved matters. The TSP record keeper reviews the received order; receipt by another agency does not substitute for TSP receipt.
Use a status log rather than drafting legal language from an online example.
| Status | What it means for your log | Evidence to keep privately |
|---|---|---|
| Draft | Proposed wording still being considered | Attorney's current version |
| Court-issued document | Document issued through the legal proceeding | Complete document and attachments |
| Sent to TSP | Submission made through the verified route | Submission record |
| Received | Receipt confirmed by the record keeper | Receipt date or notice |
| Reviewed | Completeness and qualification addressed | Decision letter and explanation |
| Payment or other action | Outcome described by the record keeper | Actual notice and unresolved questions |
Read a freeze or decision notice carefully
The regulations describe account freezes and restrictions while qualifying-order questions are processed. Exceptions and release conditions apply. Ask the record keeper and your attorney what a specific notice permits before relying on a planned withdrawal or loan. This worksheet does not determine whether an order is enforceable or whether an account should be frozen.
If a document is incomplete or rejected, record the stated reason and who will address it. Keep the original submission and the later version distinguishable. A corrected draft is not proof that the record keeper received or accepted it.
Keep OPM and beneficiary questions on separate lines
OPM's court-ordered retirement-benefit guidance covers its own benefit process. Ask about that process separately when a pension or survivor benefit is involved. Similarly, a TSP court-order question does not answer every spouse-rights or IRA beneficiary question.
Bring the relevant notice and your status log to your attorney and the appropriate program office. Send required private identifiers only through their verified channels; this site does not collect court orders. The blended-family beneficiary review can help list separate records that may also need attention without suggesting any change that conflicts with a court order.
Separate a signed order from a recordkeeper decision
An invented person has a signed court document, while the TSP record shows a request for additional information. Those are different facts. The worksheet should retain the court document's status, what was actually sent to the recordkeeper, the receipt and the recordkeeper's response. Do not mark the payment process complete because the legal document was signed.
Use the exact benefit named in the order. A retirement annuity, a TSP account and an insurance beneficiary record should remain separate even when the same family event affects all three.
Does an order about a pension automatically divide TSP?
Identify the plan and account expressly addressed, then obtain appropriate legal and recordkeeper guidance. The TSP requirements discussed here are specific to that program. An OPM retirement-benefit order or another plan's document should not be assumed to satisfy them.
Does a freeze tell me the final division amount?
A freeze and a final payment decision serve different purposes. Read the notice to identify the action, effective status, exceptions and next requested item. This guide does not interpret the order, determine the award or authorize a transaction while a restriction is in place.
What belongs in the next inquiry?
Reference the specific notice and missing item through the verified official channel. Keep the question focused on receipt, completeness or the decision actually issued. Preserve filing and delivery records, and obtain qualified legal advice for interpretation or disputed rights. Do not submit court documents or account information through an unrelated website form.
