A life insurance application, an issued policy and delivery of that policy are different events. A free-look review begins with the applicable policy and state rules, including the event that starts the period. Do not calculate a cancellation deadline from an assumed application date.
North Carolina's consumer FAQ gives different minimum periods for new and replacement policies in that state. The practical lesson is to verify the applicable requirement rather than advertise a single nationwide number of days.
Create a delivery checklist
| Item | Evidence to retain | Question to settle |
|---|---|---|
| Issued contract | Complete policy and endorsements | Is this the coverage applied for? |
| Delivery event | Actual receipt record | Which event starts the review period? |
| Review deadline | Applicable policy and state provision | What date and time apply? |
| Return procedure | Insurer's written instructions | Where and how must notice or return occur? |
| Premium refund | Applicable provision | What amount and conditions apply? |
| Existing coverage | Current policy status | Would any replacement create a coverage gap? |
Check names, benefit amount, premium schedule, riders, exclusions and ownership against the accepted application. Note a discrepancy before treating the delivered packet as a routine filing task. An explanation of an unexpected endorsement should identify the actual policy language.
Preserve a clear decision timeline
If a policy arrives while the owner is traveling, retain the delivery evidence and ask the insurer immediately which date controls. If a correction is pending, ask whether it changes the review rights. Do not assume that requesting clarification automatically extends a deadline.
If returning the contract, use the required channel and preserve evidence of timely delivery. A message to an agent may not be the same as completion of the insurer's required procedure. Request confirmation of the cancellation and refund handling.
Keep replacement decisions separate
Before canceling an older policy, compare the new policy's actual issue and effective status, underwriting outcome, exclusions and costs. The existence of a free-look period does not prove that an old policy can be restored on its former terms.
Store the delivered packet, discrepancy list, responses and final accepted decision together. This checklist organizes review; it does not instruct cancellation or determine a legal deadline. Use the insurer and applicable state insurance department to resolve uncertainty.
