Primary and contingent beneficiary records

A primary beneficiary and a contingent beneficiary occupy different tiers. A family list that names several people without specifying their tier or share can leave important questions unanswered. Use the insurer's accepted designation, not a remembered conversation, as the starting record.

The NAIC's October 2026 beneficiary guidance emphasizes keeping enough policy information for beneficiaries to locate coverage. That record can be prepared without sharing account identifiers through an inquiry form.

Check every tier separately

Field Review task Question to resolve
Primary tier Confirm current accepted names or entities Who is first in line under the designation?
Contingent tier Confirm backup designation What event makes this tier relevant?
Shares Reconcile allocation within each tier Are percentages and insurer rules satisfied?
Deceased beneficiary Identify the actual designation language How does the insurer interpret the remaining shares?
Entity designation Confirm legal name and authority What evidence would a claimant need?
Acceptance record Retain the insurer's acknowledgment Has the request actually taken effect?

Ask about any irrevocable designation, assignment, divorce order or other restriction before requesting a change. Do not assume that a will, marriage or divorce automatically updates the insurer's record.

Review a family change as a set of separate tasks

After a birth, a parent may want to update individual life insurance, FEGLI and retirement-account beneficiaries. Make a separate line for each program and insurer. Sending one designation does not establish completion of the others.

If children are intended recipients, examine the payment arrangement before simply adding names. The related guide on minor beneficiaries and trusts organizes questions for legal and insurer review. It does not select an arrangement for the family.

Prepare the family locator record

Tell the appropriate trusted person where the policy is securely stored and how to contact the insurer. Keep a current list of insurers and the accepted designation date. Actual policy numbers belong in protected records, not a public planning worksheet.

After a separately authorized change, reconcile the insurer's acceptance against the intended tiers and shares. Retain any unresolved rejection or additional-document request. Review again after a beneficiary's death or a significant family event.
