If you are thinking about leaving federal service and starting your pension later, first confirm which retirement category applies. The words deferred and postponed describe different FERS situations. They should lead to a review of eligibility, payment timing and insurance, rather than a single question about when a check will arrive.
Begin with eligibility on the separation date
OPM describes deferred retirement for certain former employees who leave before meeting immediate retirement requirements. A postponed MRA plus 10 annuity concerns an employee who was eligible for that retirement category at separation and delays the start of payments.
Your agency's benefits office should help you verify the underlying record before you choose a separation date. Ask for the retirement category and the records supporting it. A date on a planning worksheet does not establish eligibility.
Put the separate decisions on one page
Use a worksheet for your own records. Leave account numbers and identity documents out of a general website inquiry.
| Question | What to have confirmed |
|---|---|
| When would I leave federal employment? | The proposed separation date and the retirement coverage applying to my service. |
| Which category would apply on that date? | Immediate, MRA plus 10, deferred, or another applicable category. |
| When would payments begin? | The annuity commencement date and any age reduction or other adjustment. |
| What happens before payments begin? | Income and coverage arrangements during the gap. |
| Which insurance could continue or resume? | The separate eligibility and enrollment requirements for each program. |
| How would I apply? | The current instructions for my category and employment status. |
The benefit category and payment date belong in separate rows. Delaying a payment is not a substitute for confirming which category you qualified for when you left.
Check health and life insurance independently
OPM explains that deferred retirement does not provide the same opportunity to reenroll in federal insurance as an eligible postponed retirement. For a postponed MRA plus 10 annuity, eligibility conditions still matter when payments begin. Coverage during the intervening period also needs its own review.
Ask the benefits office to explain the requirements for your actual coverage history. Include the people covered with you and ask which administrator can confirm each answer. Postal health coverage, special retirement provisions and unusual service histories can require more specific guidance.
A useful question is: "What coverage would I have on the day after separation, and what would have to happen before it could change again?" Keep the written response with the retirement estimate.
Locate the records behind the estimate
Ask which service, pay and insurance records support the estimate. Identify missing or inconsistent information while you still have access to your agency's normal records process. If you are already a former employee, follow OPM's current instructions for your situation.
Our federal benefits conversation guide offers a way to organize questions without sending your personnel file to an insurance agency.
Verify the current application route
Use the current OPM instructions rather than an old saved form or an unofficial checklist. Confirm who receives the application, what documentation is required and how to preserve the submission reference. An application receipt and an approved benefit are different stages.
Before acting, have the appropriate office resolve any uncertain category, service record or insurance question. You can then review the household income gap and any private coverage question with the relevant professional. The learning center connects those next questions without treating them as one interchangeable benefit.
