Dental and vision coverage deserves a separate retirement review. A health plan election does not answer every FEDVIP question, and a familiar carrier logo does not establish that the dental and medical contracts cover the same services.
Start with the correct retirement rule
OPM states that FEDVIP has no five-year enrollment requirement. Eligible annuitants retiring on an immediate or disability annuity under the applicable federal retirement system may continue coverage or enroll for the first time after retirement. Individual eligibility and enrollment opportunities still need confirmation. Do not apply FEHB or FEGLI continuation rules to FEDVIP.
Write down whether the task is continuing an existing enrollment, changing a plan or applying for a first enrollment. Bring that distinction to BENEFEDS so the answer addresses the actual transaction.
Separate dental and vision records
| Review item | Dental record | Vision record |
|---|---|---|
| Enrollment | Plan, option and enrollment type | Plan, option and enrollment type |
| People covered | Confirmed eligible family members | Confirmed eligible family members |
| Provider access | Dentist and specialist participation | Eye-care provider and optical participation |
| Benefit details | Procedure categories and limits | Exams, lenses, frames and contact provisions |
| Cost sharing | Deductibles, coinsurance and maximums | Copayments, allowances and frequency limits |
| Transition | Effective date and payment arrangement | Effective date and payment arrangement |
Use the current year's brochure and the plan's provider verification process. A provider's willingness to see a patient is different from participation in the exact network and option being compared. Record the date and source of confirmation.
Compare expected care without assuming approval
Ask a dentist or vision provider for the procedure description needed to request a plan estimate. Have the plan explain benefit limits, exclusions, frequency restrictions and any coordination with other coverage. Label an estimate as an estimate; it is not a guarantee that a later claim will be paid.
For dental work spanning retirement or a plan change, ask how the plan determines the service date and handles treatment already underway. For vision purchases, ask which date controls eligibility and whether a frame or lens allowance has already been used. Avoid scheduling solely from a summary table when the plan needs additional information.
Confirm how premiums will be paid during transition
Keep the last payroll deduction, first expected retirement deduction and any direct billing instructions together. Ask BENEFEDS what to do if retirement processing delays the expected deduction. Follow the official account instructions rather than treating a missing deduction as evidence that coverage is free or cancelled.
If a payment method changes, save confirmation and check the next statement. Do not send bank details or benefit account credentials through a website contact form.
Prepare the next review
Keep a short list of changes that would justify another comparison: a move, a provider leaving the network, new treatment needs, a family-status event or a new plan year. Use actual plan documents for that year's decision rather than copying a prior-year allowance.
For the medical plan review, use the FEHB comparison worksheet. For spending-account questions, use the FSA and HSA record check. This worksheet does not establish enrollment, certify a claim or recommend a dental or vision carrier.
