FLTCIP application status and policy review

Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program application status and an existing enrollee's policy are different review tasks. Identify which question applies before relying on an enrollment description, an old form or a general FAQ.

Check the current application notice

As checked on November 4, 2026, the official FLTCIP site states that OPM extended the application suspension for 24 months effective December 19, 2024. During that suspension, people who are not enrolled cannot apply, and existing enrollees cannot apply to increase coverage.

Do not infer a guaranteed reopening date from that duration. Check the current OPM and FLTCIP notice again before any enrollment discussion. Older descriptions of application types or underwriting can remain online without establishing that applications are currently open.

Identify the record being reviewed

Question Appropriate evidence What not to assume
New application Current official program notice An old application guide means enrollment is open
Coverage increase Current notice and existing policy record Existing enrollment permits an increase during suspension
Existing coverage Actual policy, schedule and accepted elections Application suspension alone describes every policy right
Current claim Claim notices and administrator instructions A public FAQ establishes individual approval
Premium decision Actual dated notice and options Every policy has an identical premium arrangement
Authorized contact Administrator's accepted authority record A family relationship alone permits account access

Keep the source date visible. A statement accurate during one suspension period may need a new review when OPM issues another notice.

Review an existing policy on its own terms

Locate the policy edition, current benefit schedule, riders and any accepted changes. Ask the administrator which documents govern the current coverage. Keep policy ownership, premium responsibility and claim status separate from application availability.

For benefit amounts and limits, use the care benefit comparison. For claim evidence, use the benefit-trigger checklist. These worksheets do not change the program's current application notice.

Preserve premium and claim notices

Save the actual notice, response date, available options and submission receipt. Ask the administrator to explain the effect of a proposed election rather than substituting a coworker's experience. A saved draft or an unconfirmed phone discussion is not an accepted policy change.

If a claim is underway, ask which ongoing evidence and provider records are required. Keep a payment already made, a pending invoice and a future estimate distinct. Application suspension is not a claim decision for an existing enrollee.

Compare private coverage without implying affiliation

A private long-term-care policy or life rider is a separate contract. Its availability and benefits are not established by the FLTCIP notice, and it is not a substitute federal program simply because a federal employee purchases it. Obtain the actual offer and qualified review before comparing terms.

Do not upload policy identifiers, medical evidence or Login.gov information through a general website inquiry. This guide provides a current-source checkpoint and a document review process; it does not create an application, access an account or determine eligibility.
