Cash value, policy loans and withdrawals

The cash value shown on a statement, the amount available to borrow and the amount payable on surrender may differ. Before using a life policy for cash, request a current insurer illustration of the specific transaction and its effect on coverage.

A policy loan also differs from a withdrawal. The California insurance guide explains that outstanding loans can reduce proceeds and that a lapse or surrender may create a taxable event. Do not assume that every policy distribution is tax-free.

Reconcile the figures

Figure or term Document to request Question to answer
Cash value Current statement Which value and date are shown?
Cash surrender value Current surrender quotation Which charges or balances are deducted?
Loan balance Loan ledger Does it include accrued interest?
Loan interest Policy and current notice What rate and accrual terms apply?
Death benefit Current coverage illustration How would the proposed transaction change proceeds?
Tax records Basis history and available reporting What needs a tax professional's review?

Ask whether a proposed withdrawal, partial surrender or loan changes any guarantee. The answer may depend on policy type, rider and ongoing funding. A past illustration is not a substitute for a current projection that includes the requested transaction.

Compare two requests without treating them as equivalent

Suppose an owner asks for the same cash amount as either a loan or a withdrawal. Request separate illustrations showing the immediate amount received, future premiums assumed, outstanding debt, projected continuation and effect on benefits. Identify guaranteed and nonguaranteed assumptions in each.

Record what happens if loan interest is not paid in cash. Ask which notices precede a lapse and what actions would be necessary to maintain coverage. Do not assume that an automatic premium-loan provision will protect a policy indefinitely.

Take the tax question to the right records

Gather premiums, earlier withdrawals, dividends, loans, exchanges and any available tax forms. Ask a qualified tax professional how the actual policy and transaction are classified, including any modified endowment contract issue. The IRS proceeds tool identifies information needed for an assessment; it is not a personalized answer until the relevant facts are reviewed.

Keep the insurer's transaction confirmation after any separately authorized action. Compare it with the next statement and retain unresolved differences. Do not send policy statements or tax identifiers through a general website inquiry.
