A payment that stays level in dollars can buy less over time. An annuity's income guarantee and protection against inflation are separate questions. Identify what the contract promises to increase, if anything, and what remains fixed.
New York's insurance regulator describes level payments and some arrangements with specified increases. The existence of such designs does not mean every annuity includes an inflation adjustment.
Label the type of change
| Feature | What to locate | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Level dollar payment | Accepted schedule | Does the amount remain fixed? |
| Fixed annual increase | Contract provision | When does it begin, and how is it calculated? |
| Index-linked increase | Exact index and formula | Which caps, lags or other limits apply? |
| Variable payment | Applicable investment and payment rules | Can the amount decrease? |
| Rider-based increase | Rider definition and conditions | Is growth in a base the same as a payment increase? |
| Purchasing power | Household expense assumptions | Which expenses could outgrow the payment? |
Keep a guaranteed increase separate from an illustration that assumes future interest or investment performance. Also distinguish index-crediting to accumulation value from an automatic increase in an income payment.
Compare the starting point as well as the future
Request otherwise matched payment illustrations for any actual options under consideration. An arrangement with future increases may start at a different amount or require a different premium. Compare the full written schedule and conditions.
Use clearly labeled expense assumptions to ask how the household would cope with rising costs. Test more than one assumption without presenting any as a forecast. Include other income sources only with their own verified adjustment rules; an annuity does not inherit Social Security or federal-pension adjustment provisions.
Review the guarantee's conditions
Ask which insurer owes the payment, which election makes it effective and whether withdrawals or changes can affect it. A projected increase is not an unconditional promise.
Retain the actual adjustment provision and dated comparison. This worksheet does not forecast inflation, recommend a product or promise that any income stream will preserve purchasing power for every expense.
