Postal disability

Your coverage conversation checklist

Guaranteed-issue options with no medical exam for eligible applicants. First-time coverage is up to 60% of gross monthly income, capped at $6,000. Group participation, income limits, eligibility and policy terms apply. Post Office employees working 27 or more hours per week are eligible. No benefits are paid for a disability starting within the first 12 months from a pre-existing condition as defined in the policy.

  1. Review your existing benefits

Include sick leave, employer benefits and other disability coverage. Ask how they affect your available benefit.

  2. Confirm the plan available to you

Have the agency confirm the coverage and rate sheet that apply to your postal employment before choosing a benefit or quoting a final premium.

  3. Compare benefit and premium together

Review the selected monthly benefit, biweekly premium and first-time income limit. Ask what is included.

  4. Understand when benefits begin and end

Review the 14/14-day accident/sickness waiting periods and 12-month benefit period, including the applicable definitions.

  5. Check exclusions and limitations

Read the disability definition and pre-existing-condition provisions. Ask about any condition you do not understand.

  6. Know your next step

Ask how enrollment and claims work. Keep medical details and policy documents out of public comments.
