Immediate and deferred income start dates

A retirement budget needs an actual first-payment date, not simply the words "immediate" or "deferred." Identify what is being purchased, when the insurer's obligation begins and how the selected payment schedule fits the expense gap.

New York's insurance regulator distinguishes immediate income, deferred income and accumulation arrangements. A deferred annuity used to accumulate value is not necessarily the same as a contract that purchases a future income stream.

Build the payment timeline

Event Record to obtain Question to settle
Purchase payment Accepted contract record When are funds received and applied?
Contract effectiveness Issued schedule Which conditions remain outstanding?
Income election Accepted option and dates Is a separate election required?
First payment Written payment schedule What exact date and amount apply?
Continuing payments Frequency and duration When can the amount change or payments end?
Death before income Applicable benefit provision What, if anything, is payable before the start?

Keep a proposed payment date separate from an accepted schedule. Ask about processing requirements well before relying on a payment to cover a bill. An illustration is not evidence that an election has been accepted.

Map the income gap

List essential expense dates and the verified start dates of other income, such as a pension or Social Security. Use separately confirmed amounts. Do not assume an annuity automatically bridges every gap or replaces the need for accessible reserves.

For example, if a pension starts before a deferred income payment, identify how the intervening expenses would be funded. Ask what changes are permitted if retirement is delayed and what cost or limitation follows. Do not assume that every income start date remains flexible.

Compare what is available before the start

Ask whether the actual contract maintains an accessible value, permits surrender or provides a death benefit. New York's description notes that some deferred income arrangements do not maintain an account value. Verify the issued terms before treating a future payment promise as liquid savings.

Retain the schedule, election confirmation and unresolved conditions. Review tax treatment with the appropriate professional. This timeline does not recommend when to retire, when to claim other benefits or which annuity to purchase.
