FEGLI life-event and beneficiary record audit

Marriage, divorce, a new child or a death in the family can create several different benefits tasks. Use an audit sheet to track them separately. Changing a beneficiary is different from changing insurance coverage, and updating one federal program does not update all the others.

Separate the event from the requested change

Write the event and its date, then identify each proposed action: review eligible family coverage, ask about an available election, change a designation or reconcile a record. Ask the benefits office which deadline and evidence apply to each action. Do not assume every life event permits every increase in insurance.

Keep the coverage review distinct from the payment designation. A beneficiary may be named without being the person insured under a family coverage option. Ask the administrator to explain the actual record rather than relying on a shared name or household relationship.

Build a cross-program receipt log

Program or task Current evidence Proposed action Completion evidence
FEGLI coverage Accepted election and multiples Event-specific inquiry or election Office confirmation and effective date
FEGLI beneficiary Current valid record, if any Appropriate designation review Receipt by the proper office
TSP beneficiary Separate TSP record Separate TSP process TSP confirmation
Retirement survivor benefit Accepted retirement election Retirement-office review Accepted election or determination
Health enrollment FEHB or PSHB family record Eligibility and enrollment review Administrator confirmation

Keep each row open until the proper office confirms the relevant action. A draft PDF, email attachment or signed form in a personal folder does not show that the receiving office accepted it.

Check restrictions before treating a designation as settled

FEGLI has an order of precedence and specific rules for valid designations. Qualifying court orders and assignments can affect the analysis. A will or a different program's beneficiary form should not be treated as proof that the FEGLI record changed.

If legal documents may apply, ask the administering office and qualified counsel what needs review. Do not upload divorce decrees or other private legal records through a general marketing form. Keep the document title, secure location and responsible professional in the private audit file.

Verify practical details with the responsible office

Ask which office should receive the form for the person's current employee or annuitant status, which version is current and what signature or witness requirements apply. Use the actual instructions; do not assume that an electronic submission route exists for every form.

After submission, retain the receipt and ask how to verify the recorded designation. If a name or address has changed, ask whether an update is needed and how it should be documented. Preserve an intentional unchanged designation as a reviewed decision rather than silently rewriting it.

Schedule a record review after the event

Revisit unresolved rows once payroll and benefit records reflect the accepted changes. Check whether a coverage election and its deduction agree. Keep later household changes on a new dated review rather than overwriting the history of the earlier decision.

The TSP inheritance checklist addresses a separate account program. The FEHB survivor checklist addresses health continuation. This audit does not create a designation, interpret a legal order or determine who will receive a claim.
