Term life
Covers you for a set number of years, such as 10, 20 or 30. It usually costs the least per dollar of coverage, which makes it a popular choice while a mortgage is being paid off or children depend on your income.
Permanent life
Whole life and universal life are designed to last your whole life as long as premiums are paid. Many permanent policies also build cash value you can borrow against, under the policy's terms.
Simplified-issue and guaranteed-issue
Simplified-issue policies ask health questions but skip the medical exam. Guaranteed-issue policies ask no health questions; coverage amounts are usually smaller, and many pay a limited benefit if death occurs in the first years of the policy.
Questions to consider
- How many years would my family need support?
- Is my need temporary, like a mortgage, or lifelong, like final expenses?
- Will the plan need a medical exam or just health questions?
