How a claim works
Benefits start after a waiting period, often called the elimination period, and continue for up to the policy's benefit period while you remain unable to work. The benefit is usually a set amount or a share of your income.
What to compare
Look at the waiting period, how long benefits last, how the policy defines disability, whether pregnancy and pre-existing conditions are covered, and when coverage starts after you enroll.
Questions to consider
- How long could I cover my bills without a paycheck?
- How much paid leave do I have saved?
- Does the plan cover the conditions I'm most concerned about?
